K&F Black Diffusion Filter

K&F Black Diffusion filter (1/2)

After K&F sent me their TM2515T 60 inch tripod to test, they've sent me their Black Diffusion filter and Magnetic Filter kit. A diffusion filter is often used to make the images / videos look more cinematic and removes the digital look from modern digital cameras. The filter has a grain-like texture which creates a soft glow around the highlights. A diffusion filter also softens the skin, lifts the shadows, and gives the highlights a smooth roll-off. The filter also has a multi-coating which reduces reflections, glare and makes it waterproof (water will just glide off the filter instead of sticking on it).

Without filter

As you can see, the filter gives the highlights a nice glow and lifts the shadows. It also gives the highlights a really smooth roll-off and makes the images look less digitally. All of this combined makes the images (and videos) look a lot more cinematic and removes that digital look which often makes the difference between a professional-looking image and an amateur.

Build quality

The filter is made of an aluminum alloy frame which is only 3.3mm thick. This makes sure there's no vignetting when using a wide-angle lens like a 16mm lens or wider. The frame itself feels really solid and has a trapezoidal pattern to create friction and allows you to make sure the filter is securely attached.

Conclusion

The Black Diffusion filter is really great tool to make your footage look more cinematic and remove that digital look that modern cameras have. It has a lot of nice effects like the glow around the highlights, the smoother skin, the shadow lift, and the nice highlight roll-off. The only thing I don't like is that it's not magnetic like the K&F Magnetic Filter kit. It takes a lot more time to take the filter on and off but once the filter is on, the advantages clearly outweigh this single disadvantage.

If you don't know which size to buy, it's best to always buy the largest size you can afford. You can always attach a larger filter on a smaller lens with setup-up rings but you can't attach a smaller filter on a larger lens. K&F also sells step-up and step-down rings which are also linked below.
